While walking along Gallery Row in Carmel, California, my friend Jeff and I stepped into Westbrook Modern Gallery. My friend encouraged me to show the gallery owner some of my automotive paintings.
After looking through my portfolio, he made an unexpected, off-the-cuff request: if I would create a painting of James Dean’s legendary Porsche 550 Spyder, he would display it during the 75th Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance at The Lodge at Pebble Beach.
I took it on as both an assignment and a challenge.
There’s something exciting about being given a subject with such an iconic history and then finding my own way to bring it to life on canvas.
I’m very pleased with how it turned out—and grateful that a spontaneous visit to a gallery in Carmel led to this painting.
